MMI was founded by Shahram Tafazoli as a consulting firm in 1997 after receiving a PhD. degree from the University of British Columbia (UBC) Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) department.
Motion Metrics emerged from Tafazoli's PhD work at UBC in the 1990s, co-supervised by ICICS members Peter Lawrence (ECE) and Clarence de Silva (MECH). At the time, Lawrence and a team of ICICS researchers were working on simplifying the operator controls on heavy equipment such as excavators, log loaders, grapple yarders, and feller-bunchers. Tafazoli, now an ICICS member himself and ECE adjunct professor, contributed to this work by modelling the dynamics and frictional effects of hydraulic excavators. After completing his PhD in 1997, he started a consulting company with his two first clients, Lawrence and Tim Salcudean (ICICS/ECE), and initial free space from ICICS. Several years later, LoadMetrics, a bucket payload detection system for hydraulic mining shovels based on Tafazoli's PhD work, was on the market. He then went on to develop ToothMetrics, based on perceived market need, and his company took off.
Tafazoli and his 15 employees, many of whom are former students of ICICS members, are constantly developing novel customer-driven products. Their emphasis on R&D;, supported by programs such as SR&ED; and driven by the culture of innovation at ICICS, is a clear formula for success.
In addition to being the company president, Dr. Tafazoli holds an Adjunct Professorship position at UBC ECE Department and is a member of the IRIS Research Management Committee (IRMC). Over the years, the company has established several partnerships with other technology companies and organizations in Canada.

Born in 1979, Markus Frind is the CEO of PlentyofFish.com, which he founded in 2003 from the comfort of his apartment. In just over six years, POF has become the world's largest online dating site with over 100 million visits per month and more than 2.5 billion page views. Markus started his career as an affiliate and employed his tactics on POF to grow his revenue to over $10 million a year.
Markus Frind, CEO and Founder of PlentyofFish Media Inc., graduated in 1999 from British Columbia Institute of Technology with a diploma in Computer Systems Technology. Over the next few years, he worked for several dot.com companies as the number of them in Vancouver began to wane. Markus ended up working at a company as a website and database administrator where he found and fixed errors.
In 2003, Frind had to learn ASP.NET and to better learn the language, he built a dating website. The free dating website quickly grew in Canada and then spread, via word of mouth, to the U.K., Australia, and the United States. To keep the site free, Plentyoffish began using AdSense to generate revenue. The first cheque arrived in July 2003 and was for $1,100 USD.
In 2004, PlentyofFish became a full-time business for Frind. He ran the site independently until 2007, when he began hiring other employees at his new Vancouver headquarters. In August, 2009 PlentyofFish was featured in a music video for the song "Available" by Flo Rida and R&B Sensation Akon. In 2009, PlentyofFish also launched a contest with Lady Gaga allowing single members to go together and meet the singer during her "Fame Monster" tour.
Why I like ASP.NET?
Well I use ASP.NET now because it's trivial and easy and gets the job done. There is just so much to learn out there and every six months it completely changes. So I stuck with what I knew, used it a lot, and I've gotten really, really good at it. What I've done is about 10 to 20 times more efficient than what anybody else has ever done with the ASP.NET.
Why does online dating work?
It works because people want to meet people, and have companionship, and sex. The Internet is the most efficient and quick way of meeting new people. You can call it online dating and you can call it chatting and you can call it social networking, it's all the same thing.

Currently, Mr. Ladouceur is President and Managing Director of Mardale Investments Ltd. In his past role as CEO, President, and Chairman of MetroNet Communications Inc., Mr. Ladouceur completed private and public financings in excess of $2 billion, including the company's successful IPO. Mr. Ladouceur also initiated the sale of MetroNet to AT&T Corp. in 1999 for $5 billion.
Mr. Ladouceur served as the CFO and Director of Rogers Communications Inc. (Toronto:RCI-A.TO), one of the largest cable, cellular, and broadcasting companies in North America. While at Rogers, Mr. Ladouceur was responsible for the completion of more than $3 billion in public and private financings. In addition, Mr. Ladouceur was the founding CEO of ISM Information Systems (Alberta) Ltd., which was subsequently acquired by IBM Global Services.
He has also served as Chief Executive Officer with SpotWave Wireless, Datawire Communication Networks and FutureLink Corp. Mr. Ladouceur is past Chairman of the Competitive Telecommunications Association of Canada. He has served on several public and private company Boards of Directors, including the Boards of Datawire Communication Networks Inc. and Breken Group Ltd.

Robert Forget started in the business development group at Vecima Networks Inc. in 2004 and is currently the Director of Wireless Sales for the organization.
He received his Bachelor of Engineering in Engineering Physics degree in 2002 from the University of Saskatchewan, and an MBA from Lansbridge University in 2006.
Robert ran his own consultancy firm from 2000-2004 specializing in electronics design and systems implementation. Mr. Forget has been active on the boards of many organizations from such diverse areas as housing developments, politics, and the church.
