Teaching Chemical Biology - molecular mimicry, glycomimetics, protein-ligand interactions, immunochemistry, enzyme inhibitors, NMR/molecular modeling, drug and vaccine design

Our group is studying the nature and origin of carbohydrate mimicry for the purpose of drug and vaccine design. We take our leads from molecular mimicry displayed by Nature. Our goals are the understanding of the molecular mechanisms of recognition that can be used to tailor specific immune responses or inhibit specific enzymatic reactions. The results have implications for the control or treatment of bacterial and viral diseases, diabetes Type 2, and cancer.

Dr. Pinto was born in Colombo, Sri Lanka and received his B.Sc. degree in Chemistry and Ph.D. from Queen's University. Dr. Pinto served as Chair of the Chemistry Department from 1999-2004, and is currently Vice-President, Research at Simon Fraser University.

Dr. Pinto received the 1992 Horace S. Isbell Award of the American Chemical Society, the 1993 Merck Frosst Award of the Canadian Society for Chemistry (CSC), the 2002 Bernard Belleau Award of the CSC, and the 2005 British Columbia Innovation Council Frontiers in Research Award.

He is a Fellow of the Chemical Institute of Canada, and was elected to the Academy of Sciences of the Royal Society of Canada in 2003. Dr. Pinto is a pioneer in the field of chemical biology, having developed novel NMR/molecular modeling protocols for protein structure determination and the study of ligand topographies essential for drug and vaccine design, and is the founder of Mimos Therapeutics Inc.

With an exceptionally strong record of research funding, Dr. Pinto also has a proven ability to attract investment. He has brought in approximately $5 million in funding as Principal Investigator since 2000, and has been co-PI on 20 grants in this same time period.

March, 2010 - We are pleased to announce the appointment of Marcus Maguire to the position of Senior Vice President of Western Canada operations. A native Calgarian, Marcus will oversee AGAT's Energy, Environmental and Mining Geochemistry divisions throughout Western Canada.

The consolidation of these divisions under Maguire, and their further expansions will provide a unique opportunity to establish an enhanced business relationship with our many clients; providing multi-divisional analytical service requirements with one laboratory vendor. Marcus graduated from St. Francis Xavier University, with an Honours degree in Chemistry and joined AGAT Laboratories in 1996 as an Inorganic Analyst in the Oil and Gas division specializing in metals analysis.

Shortly thereafter, Marcus transferred to the newly formed Environmental division. After improving several metals analysis methods, Marcus was promoted to the position of Quality Assurance Officer for Alberta where he directed significant improvements in AGAT Laboratories' Quality Assurance, Quality Control systems and under his direction, in 1997 the ISO 9000 registration was achieved.

This registration was the first step in paving the way for AGAT Laboratories' present day Quality Assurance Quality Control systems and extensive network of accreditations achieved at our Canadian laboratories. In 1998, after serving as the Manager of the Calgary Environmental Project Management team, Marcus was promoted to General Manager of AGAT Laboratories' Environmental division.

In 1999, Marcus transferred to Ontario to directly oversee the Eastern Canadian expansion of AGAT's new Environmental division. Under his leadership and vision, new laboratories and operations were established in Mississauga, London, Hamilton, Kitchener, Montreal, Quebec City and Halifax.

In 2005, as the Senior Vice President of Environmental Operations, Marcus oversaw AGAT's Western Canadian Environmental service expansions resulting in the creation of new Environmental laboratories in Calgary, Grande Prairie and the currently ongoing expansions in Edmonton and Vancouver.

In 2009, Marcus directed the expansion of services into the precious metals mining industry with the creation of new laboratories to supplement the existing Calgary Rock Properties laboratory which services the Energy and Mining industries.
