Gay Hahn helped take Avalon in a new direction. She lives in the neighbourhood, and one day in 1995, she was driving by the community centre at Trout Lake. She noticed a crowd of people in the centre's parking lot. She drove in to investigate and found an organic food market there, where said crowd was buying everything in sight.
She thought: Why not organic milk?
Why not milk produced without antibiotics, hormones or pesticides? With cows fed on certified organic feed, produced on land pesticide-free?
It took four years of research and planning. She found a farmer with a small dairy herd that met all those stipulations, and in 1999, Avalon bought 25 cows. It produced 19,000 litres of organic milk that year. It sold all of it.
The dairy bought more cows, and more land in the Fraser Valley. Demand for organic milk outstripped production, so the dairy bought acreage on Barnston Island, and leased more land there, too. Avalon now produces 500,000 litres of milk a month, with 60 per cent of it organic. The organic product, Hahn said, is particularly popular with the local Asian market.
This rejuvenation has propelled Avalon into its second century. It will soon move much of its operations into a new 40,000-sq.-ft. plant in Burnaby. It now ships product as far as Winnipeg and the Yukon, and is in the process of signing up a distributor for Hong Kong.
Gay Hahn is also Chair of NSSC's Food Advisory Committee.
