I am passionate about integrating communications technologies, collaboration processes and knowledge to optimize performance and innovation in organizations, particularly in the education sector.
I am currently Manager, Web & Collaboration Services at BCIT, with about 15 staff. The scope of my responsibility includes:
1) Active leadership and participation in BCIT's Computer Resources departmental initiatives, including planning BCIT's technology-enabled Learning Vision, and guiding project management standards and enterprise architecture evolution.
2) Project delivery and e-zine production for "Public Web" - BCIT's "marketing" web property targeted at prospective students - integrating brand and e-business transactions for multiple schools within the Institute.
3) Managing deployment of myBCIT, a portal project (SCT Luminis) with all related application integration and organizational change management that goes with "portal".
4) Building BCIT Commons, a web property designed for communities-of-practice (applied research, student e-portfolios, industry partnerships, etc.)
5) Ongoing organizational support of BCIT's web publishing community, following recent implementation of a content management system.
6) Technical support of various online learning collaboration and support systems, including WebCT and other web learning and collaboration tools.
7) Technical and user support of LotusNotes email for administration and faculty use.
In my early career I spent several years managing large-scale IT and telecommunications projects for telcos and systems integrators, where the focus was typically on “just-the-technology".
Disillusioned with the technocratic view of organizational change, in 1994 I created Knowledge Architecture Inc., a company focused on helping young adults develop workplace-ready skills in information technologies (IT) through project-based learning and collaboration experiences.
Knowledge Architecture implemented a first-generation collaborative learning environment for secondary schools and published extensive research results as a project within Canada's NCE TeleLearning Research Network.
In 2000, I took a break from the rigours of running an ed-sector focused company to work for Terasen Gas, where I was responsible for e-business strategy.
Dot-bomb took the wind out of e-business and after 2 years of implementing content management and intranets and portals for this gas utility, I moved back to the education sector.
I am currently working on a Ph.D. in Applied Science at Simon Fraser University's School of Interactive Arts and Technology, with a focus on online learning environments.
I teach in the Project Management Certificate program at University of BC and was faculty at Royal Roads University's Masters of Arts in Knowledge Management program (in 2003).
I hold a business administration degree from the University of Cape Town, South Africa, and am married to Godfrey. We have three teenage daughters who dance, play piano and paint murals while teasing their Mom about her “collaboration thing".

Teaching Chemical Biology - molecular mimicry, glycomimetics, protein-ligand interactions, immunochemistry, enzyme inhibitors, NMR/molecular modeling, drug and vaccine design
Our group is studying the nature and origin of carbohydrate mimicry for the purpose of drug and vaccine design. We take our leads from molecular mimicry displayed by Nature. Our goals are the understanding of the molecular mechanisms of recognition that can be used to tailor specific immune responses or inhibit specific enzymatic reactions. The results have implications for the control or treatment of bacterial and viral diseases, diabetes Type 2, and cancer.
Dr. Pinto was born in Colombo, Sri Lanka and received his B.Sc. degree in Chemistry and Ph.D. from Queen's University. Dr. Pinto served as Chair of the Chemistry Department from 1999-2004, and is currently Vice-President, Research at Simon Fraser University.
Dr. Pinto received the 1992 Horace S. Isbell Award of the American Chemical Society, the 1993 Merck Frosst Award of the Canadian Society for Chemistry (CSC), the 2002 Bernard Belleau Award of the CSC, and the 2005 British Columbia Innovation Council Frontiers in Research Award.
He is a Fellow of the Chemical Institute of Canada, and was elected to the Academy of Sciences of the Royal Society of Canada in 2003. Dr. Pinto is a pioneer in the field of chemical biology, having developed novel NMR/molecular modeling protocols for protein structure determination and the study of ligand topographies essential for drug and vaccine design, and is the founder of Mimos Therapeutics Inc.
With an exceptionally strong record of research funding, Dr. Pinto also has a proven ability to attract investment. He has brought in approximately $5 million in funding as Principal Investigator since 2000, and has been co-PI on 20 grants in this same time period.
